| Synopsis | A poignant tale set in Rome and Bologna during the 1920s, Il cuore altrove tells the story of a 35 year old language professor, Nello Balocchi (Neri Marcore), who comes from a long line of Papal tailors. His timidness around women prompts his father (Giancarlo Giannini) to send him to Bologna, to teach at a high school, in the hope that living in such an emancipated city will enable him to finally find a wife, thus providing the family with its much awaited heir.
On reaching Bologna, Nello goes to live in a pensione where he shares a room with a Neapolitan barber, and thanks to his advice, he gradually gets to know the fairer sex. By chance or providence, Nello finds himself at a tea dance in a home for blind women. There he meets ‘femme fatale’ Angela Gardini (Vanessa Incontrada), the most beautiful and open-minded young woman in all Bologna, who turns his life upside down. Pupi Avati’s sumptuous directorial style is evident in every scene. “Avati in a state of grace” La Repubblica. “A classic romantic melodrama, glorious to look at and engagingly entertaining” Urban cinefile Australia Cannes Official Selection 2003; Winner 2003 Italian Academy Award (David di Donatello) Best Director |
